Rio Grande Federal Release Path
The Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator covers federal inmates incarcerated from 1982 to the present. It is not a county release list. If Rio Grande County Jail shows a federal pickup or U.S. Marshals transfer, the local release record may mean the person left county custody, not that the person returned to the community.
The U.S. Marshals Service houses federal detainees in federal, state, local, and private facilities. That means a person can have a Rio Grande County jail event and a federal custody event in the same case trail.
Search BOP Release Records
Use the BOP locator when the sentence or detention is federal. BOP's records guide says if a listed release date is in the past and no facility location appears, release from BOP custody occurred on that date. It also warns that release dates can be affected by First Step Act recalculations.
- Search the BOP locator by register number if available.
- Use name search only after confirming the case was federal.
- Read the facility and release-date fields together.
- If the date is in the past with no BOP facility, check whether another custody system applies.
- Use Rio Grande court or sheriff records for any local transfer event.
BOP Is Not CDOC
A federal BOP release is not a Colorado prison release. CDOC handles state-prison and parole records. BOP handles federal prison records. Rio Grande County Jail handles the local custody event. ICE handles immigration detention. Keep each system in its lane before concluding that a person is fully out of custody.

After a BOP Release
BOP release from federal custody does not rule out state, local, or immigration custody. BOP's own records guide cautions that a person may still be in another correctional or criminal-justice custody system after leaving BOP. For a Rio Grande County case, check the local court for warrants or orders, the sheriff for any local hold, CDOC for state status, and ICE ODLS if immigration detention is possible.
